The present work focuses on an analysis of the literary work Memórias Póstumas de Brás
Cubas, because in it the author brings a narrator-character to criticize what happened in the 19th
century, especially with the rich young people of Rio's society. But besides that, Machado de
Assis achieves a milestone in the history of literature, because her genius that escaped all the
standards adopted by romanticism presented in her work makes her considered the founder of
realism in Brazil, calling not only the attention of the readers of the time, but also of researchers
and readers of the present time, since it is also possible to find many traces of linguistic
variation, not only on the part of the bourgeoisie, but also of people from peripheral regions of
