Method: the water requirement of sugar cane was estimated using the Thornthwaite Water Balance (1948) and mapped using a geostatistical procedure. Results: it was found that there is significant variability in the water variability of soils in the region of Tabuleiros Costeiros de Alagoas, providing the existence of water surpluses and deficits throughout the seasons. Usually, the dry season occurs between the months of October to February and the surplus in the months of April to August. The spatialization of the water balance and the climatic risk classes suggests the existence of a pattern, with greater water deficit in the south of the study area, and greater water availability in the center north. Conclusion: the water balance of sugar cane showed that there are production limitations regarding climatic characteristics, which must be supplied with the use of adequate technologies, mainly from the rational use of water.
